An albuterol nebulizer is a medical treatment that uses a machine to turn liquid albuterol medication into a fine mist, which is then inhaled to relax airway muscles and make breathing easier. It is primarily a quick-relief ("rescue") medication for conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 

How It Works and What It Treats

Albuterol is a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA), a type of bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways in the lungs, which become tight during an asthma attack or bronchospasm. This widens the air passages, providing fast relief for symptoms such as: 

• Difficulty breathing
• Shortness of breath
• Wheezing
• Coughing
• Chest tightness 

The nebulizer method is often used for young children or individuals who find it difficult to use metered-dose inhalers correctly. 

Key Information for Use

• Prescription Only: Albuterol is a prescription medication; you should never use over-the-counter asthma medications in its place.
• Dosage: The typical adult dosage for the nebulized solution is 2.5 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed for symptoms. Your doctor will determine the correct dose based on your age and condition severity.
• Administration: The treatment involves sitting upright and breathing the mist through a face mask or mouthpiece for typically 5 to 15 minutes until the medication cup is empty.
• Storage: Vials of the solution should be stored in their original foil pouch at room temperature or in the refrigerator to protect them from light.
• Cleaning: The nebulizer machine and accessories must be cleaned after each use to prevent infection. 

Common Side Effects

Side effects are typically temporary and may include: 
• Nervousness or shakiness (tremor)
• Rapid or pounding heartbeat
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Sore throat or runny nose 

Contact your healthcare provider if side effects are severe or if your symptoms worsen after using the medication (a rare but possible reaction called bronchospasm). 

Important Precautions
