Albuterol is a prescription bronchodilator used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, such as asthma or COPD, and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm. As of 2026, it remains available in several formulations, including metered-dose inhalers (MDI), dry powder inhalers (DPI), nebulizer solutions, and oral tablets. 
Common Brand Names
Albuterol is sold under several well-known brands, many of which are now available in generic forms:
· ProAir HFA and ProAir RespiClick.
· Ventolin HFA.
· AccuNeb (specifically for children aged 2–12).
· Airsupra (combination with budesonide).
Typical Dosage
· Inhalation Aerosol/Powder: Usually 2 inhalations every 4 to 6 hours for acute relief. For exercise, take 2 inhalations 15 to 30 minutes before activity.
· Nebulizer Solution: Typically 2.5 mg three or four times daily for adults and children over 12.
· Oral Tablets: Standard starting dose is 2 mg to 4 mg three or four times a day.
Common Side Effects
Most side effects are related to the drug's stimulatory effect on the body:
· Tremors or shakiness.
· Nervousness or excitement.
· Headache and dizziness.
· Increased heart rate or palpitations.
· Nausea and dry mouth.
Important Warnings
· Paradoxical Bronchospasm: Inhaled albuterol may occasionally cause life-threatening worsening of breathing problems immediately after use.
· Cardiovascular Effects: Use with caution if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or irregular heartbeats.
· Priming: Most MDIs must be "primed" (sprayed into the air) if new, dropped, or not used for more than two weeks to ensure a full dose is delivered.
