albuterol rxlist-Handheld Nebulizers

Albuterol is a prescription bronchodilator used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, such as asthma or COPD, and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm. As of 2026, it remains available in several formulations, including metered-dose inhalers (MDI), dry powder inhalers (DPI), nebulizer solutions, and oral tablets.

Common Brand Names

Albuterol is sold under several well-known brands, many of which are now available in generic forms:

· ProAir HFA and ProAir RespiClick.

· Ventolin HFA.

· Proventil HFA.

· AccuNeb (specifically for children aged 2–12).

· Airsupra (combination with budesonide).

Typical Dosage

· Inhalation Aerosol/Powder: Usually 2 inhalations every 4 to 6 hours for acute relief. For exercise, take 2 inhalations 15 to 30 minutes before activity.

· Nebulizer Solution: Typically 2.5 mg three or four times daily for adults and children over 12.

· Oral Tablets: Standard starting dose is 2 mg to 4 mg three or four times a day

Common Side Effects

Most side effects are related to the drug's stimulatory effect on the body:

· Tremors or shakiness.

· Nervousness or excitement.

· Headache and dizziness.

· Increased heart rate or palpitations.

· Nausea and dry mouth.

Important Warnings

· Paradoxical Bronchospasm: Inhaled albuterol may occasionally cause life-threatening worsening of breathing problems immediately after use.

· Cardiovascular Effects: Use with caution if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or irregular heartbeats.

· Priming: Most MDIs must be "primed" (sprayed into the air) if new, dropped, or not used for more than two weeks to ensure a full dose is delivered.
